No matter the size of the vessel, piracy is a serious concern. Intruders seek to cause harm, steal, and create chaos when they illegally force themselves onto a boat. It's essential your vessel take the piracy threat real. Learn some immediate things you can do to protect your crew and ship.

Perform Research

Ensure you perform research so that you can identify the threat. The risk of piracy exists no matter the area; however, there are certain areas that are high-risk zones for this illegal activity. The vessel manager or captain should research these zones along your route. If the threat is incredibly high, you may need to rearrange your course. However, at the very least, you will know the territories in which you need to rely on heighten security to protect the vessel. 

Establish Plan

Piracy is a threat you must plan for every day. If you're lucky enough not ever to use your plan — great. However, an emergency plan is something you'd rather be with than be without out. As part of the emergency plan, you need to include information for your crew on how to recognize a threat, how to communicate the threat, how to respond to the risk, and in the event of extreme circumstances, how to retreat from the situation.

More often than not, the vessel that the attackers use doesn't compare to the sophistication of the boat that they're attacking. If you keep maintenance a priority, you have a better chance of how pacing their vessel in the event they are trying to attack you. In addition to their vessel's shortcomings, the faster the ship is moving, the harder it is for the pirate attackers to board your boat. Ensure you keep maintenance a top priority so that you can maintain a high speed in these dangerous situations.
